We’re so unbelievably excited to tell you that Beacon; our AI powered geo-location search assistance app, is live and already being rapidly adopted by the military community. Our Facebook launch post was shared over 100 times and reached 15,000 people in the first 12 hours!
What is Beacon?
Beacon is a Facebook Messenger Bot powered by Artificial Intelligence. When you visit All Call Signs on Messenger, you’ll be prompted to Subscribe to Beacon, at which point you’ll be taken through a short on-boarding process.
Once signed up to the service, we’ll send you an alert if any vulnerable member of the military community goes missing or is at risk to themselves and you’re in the rough area of their last known location. We’ll give you all of the information you need to be part of the reactive response to ensuring their safety, including:
- Circumstances that have led to a search
- Point of contact for search
- Where you should go to help
- What action you should take
- Anything else the leading agencies feel relevant
Getting boots on the ground in response to an at risk person going off the radar can literally mean the difference between life and death, and our hope is that Beacon will prevent a lot of the misinformation and confusion that has hindered search efforts in the past. Beacon is a direct line between all those willing to assist and the people in charge of the search effort.
How does it work?
Beacon is powered by Facebook’s Messenger Platform, which comes with a powerful set of tools including the ability to broadcast messages to a large group of people at once. We can also tailor this broadcast based on location, which means that we can quickly mobilise a ground team of willing volunteers to aid in a search, anywhere in the UK in minutes. We’re sure you no strangers to how useful social media can be in attracting a large audience quickly, Beacon harnesses that power with the discipline needed to conduct a successful search mission.
I’ve signed up, what’s next?
It’s one of those services we’ve set up with the hope that we’ll never need it, but if this year has taught us anything, it’s that we most likely will. If a member of our military community goes missing or is at risk of self harm, then the agencies in charge of the search effort can launch a Beacon. When they do, the information will come directly to you. Until we build up a solid user base we may include users from slightly further afield, but once the numbers are there we can be a bit more targeted on who gets the Beacons. If you would rather get all of the Beacons we launch, then just send us a message on Facebook saying ‘send me all beacons’.
Thank you to the hundreds of users who signed up to the Beacon platform within 24 hours. We’re totally overwhelmed by the support for this project and genuinely have high hopes for it saving lives.
